The Dental Face Lift - California Reconstructive DentistryImmediate Over Denture Bite ReconstructionMost of us undergo a variety of dental treatments on an "incident by incident" basis. A cavity filled here and there.... along with an occasional extraction or new dental crown.As we get up into our middle age years and beyond, the long term effects of this approach begin to appear. Individual restorations and restorative products used over the years age differently and in some cases with substantial negative outcomes. 
Our featured patient had such a history of dental treatments. She too had years and years of experience at fixing or taking care of one dental need.... only to have yet another dental problem surface a little bit later. The seemingly "never-ending-cycle."At the time she presented in our office however, she was not interested in treating her most precious need... but rather wanted to, first of all, create an outcome that would re-establish ALL of the dental function she had lost over the years. Secondly, our patient wanted to have a cosmetic outcome that would result in regaining her confidence and ability to smile spontaneously... something she had lost over the years. 
During the consultation with Dr. Muslin, most of the typical cumulative conditions that are associated with "piecemeal dentistry" were confirmed. Missing teeth, broken or loose restorations, multiple abcesses, periodontal (gum) disease, bone loss and a severely collapsing bite were all evident.Sensible Dentistry: Step OneOur patient was excited to get started with treatment procedures that would be the most comprehensive she had ever had. Dr. Muslin provided all of the preliminary treatments she needed for removing all of the abscesses and existing periodontal disease.Maxillary (upper arch) reconstruction included multiple root canals (RCT) on all needed upper tooth structures in order to save all of the patient's remaining healthy teeth. The patient chose this treatment rather than undergo multiple extractions to take advantage of being able to be fitted with a custom overdenture .... all in one day. 
For many patients, over dentures are an excellent treatment choice that preserves existing teeth and eliminates the need for invasive oral surgery that might require months of healing. In addition, our patient would NOT be toothless anytime during her entire treatment plan.Sensible Dentistry: Step TwoOnce the overdenture was in place (see adjacent photo), work was begun immediately, at the patient's request, on the lower jaw.Although the patient had the option of undergoing dental implant surgery, a popular tooth replacement procedure, she elected instead to use her remaining healthy tooth structures that were fitted with specialized thimble crowns. 
These unique crowns seal off the healthy tooth structures and provide a rock solid foundation for a permanent bridge that will be highly resistant to decay under the bridge (a common concern with normal bridgework).The structural and dental function goals were closely monitored during articulation studies and fabrication processes. Anatomically correct dental components assured an occlusal relationship the patient hadn't experienced in years. 
The premium grade of porcelain use for the over denture and lower bridge created cosmetic qualities that truly mimic what Mother Nature provides (compare close up photos to see color and shading characteristics).Our last photo shows the dramatic effects the patient "felt" about her treatment.
